Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer while browsing on an internet site or using a web application.
These files contain information of various kinds that aim to enrich a site’s capabilities (such as online purchases or customization of messages according to your preferences), collect statistical data, and generally improve your navigation experience.
There are different types of cookies, which are classified according to their characteristics and usage patterns, according to this schema:
Session Cookies / Permanent Cookies
Session cookies are temporarily stored in your computer’s memory while visiting a site (for example, to track the selected language). Session cookies are stored for a short period of time and deleted at the end of the browser.
Permanent cookies, however, remain on your computer for a long period of time, depending on the set deadline when the cookie is generated. These cookies allow web sites to keep track of information even during subsequent user visits, avoiding for example having to re-enter their login credentials.
First Party Cookies / Third Party Cookies
First-party cookies are set by the same sites (with the same domain as the one in the browser address bar) and can only be read from those sites.
Third-party cookies, however, are set from domains other than those indicated in the browser address bar, or from organizations that do not match website owners. For example, such cookies used to collect information for advertising purposes and content customization, as well as track visits to the site, may be “third-party cookies”.
Technical Cookies / Profiling Cookies
Technical cookies are essential for the proper functioning of a website or application: without them, the site may not function properly or completely prevent some features.
Profiling cookies are used to collect and store visitor information (such as visited pages, searches done, etc.) to offer more targeted and in-line advertising.
